Why are sports fans primarily male?
Do modern team sports mimic ancestral hunting activities? And if so, were such activities predominantly male?
Anthropologist have speculated that our ancestors lived in bands of between fifty and one hundred members, yielding approximately five to ten able bodied adult males to act as a team in hunting big game. These numbers are arrived at based on calculations dealing with how far a kill could be carried, what the animal population of an area could support, etc.
Is it only a coincidence that a professional team sport has approximately these numbers (5 to 11) members acting together on the field?
